Meet Jessica

Question: Who are you? Tell me about yourself.

I’m Jessica from Mama In A Stitch, and I became obsessed with knit and crochet shortly after having my daughter! I’m a Colorado native, and love the outdoors and nature, but yarny crafts are just as important to me now. When I’m not busy playing with my 10 year old daughter, or being outdoors with my hubby, I’m usually working on a crochet or knitting project.

You could say I’m not the most patient crocheter (haha!), so I tend to gravitate to chunkier yarns for quick projects. However, I have stretched myself the last couple of years and have used more worsted weight yarns (GASP!) If you check out my blog, you’ll see lots of trees and nature in my photos as we live in a forest, and I love using the beautiful outdoors as a setting for my projects.

Question: How did you learn how to crochet? How long have you been crocheting?

I learned to crochet from YouTube about 9 years ago! I can’t believe it’s been that long. It’s really interesting because my great grandmother, who I don’t remember, immigrated from Italy and had made so many beautiful crochet pieces. However, no one in my family knew how to crochet, nor did they teach me. My family members say that I take after her now that I’m crochet so many things. Thanks to the internet, I was able to learn and can appreciate the crocheted pieces that have been passed on to me!

Question: Do you have any tips for new crocheters? Any guidance to make them successful at a new hobby?

I tried to learn to knit and crochet from a book, and it didn’t work out well for me! It was actually a disaster that made me almost completely give up on learning. YouTube saved me because I could search out tutorials that made sense to me. I would watch, pause, and learn. I definitely recommend finding some good, concise tutorials online that you find to be clear and easy to watch.

Question: What do you enjoy crocheting the most?

While I love making quick pieces, I have really come to enjoy blankets. The styles and options are endless, and I’ve always been obsessed with comfy blankets and pillows. I also like to make cardigans as well as bags.

Question: What else are you passionate about (other than crochet)?

If you could count being a mama as a passion, that would be my main one! I absolutely love hanging out with my daughter, watching her grow, and spending time with her. Besides this, I LOVE being outdoors. We are so lucky to live on a couple of acres where we have a green house, as well as lovely places to walk. My daughter has grown a love for horses, which has reignited a passion for me as well. We are both enjoying riding and being around such magnificent animals, which I hadn’t been in over 20 years! The outdoors is a bit like crochet and knitting to me – it takes me away, and there’s an unexplained solace and beauty.

Question: What prompted you to start designing?

Oddly, I started designing as soon as I knew how to make basic crochet stitches. I was making up projects before I even knew how to read a pattern! I then had to learn to read patterns in order to write up my own projects.

Question: How long have you been designing and where do you publish your patterns?

I’ve been officially designing and sharing my patterns for about 7 years, and I share them for free on my blog Mama In A Stitch. You can also find many of my designs on the Lion Brand website as they have been made into kits. It’s been such an honor and amazing ride!

Question: What do you enjoy designing the most?

I’m going to have to say blankets! It’s sort of varied, with bags, simple sweaters, and now I’m a blanket fan.

Question: What tips would you give to someone interested in designing and blogging?

If you love it, do it! When I started, I personally didn’t blog or design with the idea of it turning into a career. I did it because I loved it, and it’s what I wanted to do with my free time. That worked well for me, because if it was a chore, I wouldn’t have kept it going long enough for it to turn into something more substantial. If you’re wanting to design and blog, don’t put a lot of pressure on yourself! Just do your passion, and put it out there. I do suggest learning to take good photos, have good lighting, and eventually consider getting a decent camera and lens. This can make a huge difference in folks checking out your designs. Most of all, have fun!

Learn How to Set Up a Successful Blog

Question: What goals have you set for yourself for the future?

My goal has been balance for several years now. I think this year, I finally feel like I’ve done a decent job with it! I’m going to keep that as my goal in the future as well. I also want to ensure that I share designs that people enjoy, and most importantly, they understand and can conquer. It’s such a deep joy to see people make something from my pattern and find joy in using it or gifting it.

Question: Who are your favorite makers? How have they inspired you?

This is so hard to answer because there are so many! All About Ami is a fave, and I also really enjoy Make & Do, as well as Attic 24, and Twinkie Chan (as her pieces are so different than what I make)! The cool thing about makers is the variety and endless creativity.

Question: Do you have a favorite yarn you like to use when you are crocheting? What colors and fibers do you gravitate toward when choosing your yarn?

I tend to use a lot of Lion Brand, and always have, even before blogging. My most used yarn is probably Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick! I like the wool blends as they have a nice, quality look to them, but are still reasonably priced. Other than that, I love finding yarns at local yarn stores for special projects. Visiting Purl Soho in New York City was a dream as their colors and selections are so beautiful!
