Recently I got a request for a special roundup - free crochet patterns that use variegated yarns to their best advantage! Searching for variegated yarn patterns can be tricky - they aren't the easiest yarns to use, and it's not a sorting feature on most pattern directories. So I put out a call to my favorite bloggy friends for their best free crochet patterns using variegated yarn. And boy, did they deliver!

Chosing a pattern to use with a variegated yarn can be tricky - stitch definition can get lost, and you might want to watch for pooling. Typically, the simpler the stitch the better - but there is a great variety of patterns here that all look fab in variegated yarn! And that's it for today's roundup! As I mentioned above, this roundup of variegated crochet patterns was a reader request - do you have any requests? Let me know!

My best advice would be to look in the stashes for sale or trade on Ravelry! Good luck!

I was testing out this pattern and thought the slight variegated yarn i was using looked nice since you work the scarf in rows the long way. I was using Red Heart Midnight in a purple color..

    Search 'crocus scarf' on ravelry.

I made the Crochet Lattice Flower Shawl pattern by DearestDebi in James C Brett Marble Chunky last year and it turned out beautifully! Because you work from the bottom tip of the triangle up you can make it from any weight of yarn, you just keep going until it is the right size (although finer yarn obviously means more rows and more repeats). I really relied on the video tutorial when starting this pattern, but I soon got into the rhythm of it. It does look great in variegated yarn! I'm seriously tempted by some of the other patterns in this round up now..

The snake is a great pattern for mystery skeins--where some very lovely, caring individual thinks about you and gifts you something without a ball band or with fiber content listed as "unknown." The snakes also make great light sabers or swords if you stuff them with enough "stuff."
