Can I use a Ham Hock?

Yes, you can use ham hock to cook with the black eyed peas. If you made a spiral ham over the holidays, we always like to freeze our ham hock. This recipe is perfect to add in your frozen ham hock or use it in a pot of brown beans.

If you don’t have a ham hock, you can buy one from your local meat market or just use diced ham. The diced ham or ham hock gives them beans so much flavor.

Once the black eyed peas are done cooking, remove the ham hock and shred any meat that is left on the ham hock.

Can I make Black Eyed Peas without Soaking them?

You can but the cooking instructions differ. If you do not want to soak the beans, cook on HIGH for 7 hours without opening the lid during the cooking time.

  • Step 1 – Soak Black-eye Peas – Start by soaking the black-eyed peas overnight or a quick soak.In the morning drain the water.
  • Step 2 – Add ingredients to Slow Cooker – Add the chicken broth, can of diced tomatoes, ham, onion, garlic, and pepper. Stir with the dried beans.

How long do I Cook Black-Eyed Peas?

  • Step 3 – Slow Cook Ingredients – Place in crock pot and cover and cook on LOW for 10 hours or HIGH for 6 hours. Do not open the lid during the cooking time.

How Long to Soak Black Eyed Peas?

We recommend soaking the black eyed peas overnight. I like to wash the peas and make sure to remove any debris or dirt from the black eyed peas.

Once you are ready to start cooking them, make sure to rinse and drain the water that the peas soaked in.

Recipe Variations:

  • Add in Kielbasa – Feel free to add in kielbasa instead of the ham for a variations.
  • Chicken Thighs – This recipe would be delicious with chicken thighs. You can use leftover chicken thighs or cook the chicken with the peas.
  • Add in Bacon – For added pork flavor, add in bacon with the diced ham. You can use pork bacon or turkey bacon.
  • Make it spicy – We love to make this with a little kick to it. Add in slice jalapenos or sprinkle in a teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
  • Large Pot – You can also make these black eyed peas on the stove top in a large pot.
  • Broth – We prefer to use broth for added flavor, but you can use 4 cups of water.

How to Store Leftovers:

These slow cooker black eyed peas are delicious leftover. We like to store in individual containers for an easy lunch the next day. We think they taste even better the next day. As the ingredients really marinate together.

If stored properly, they will last about 3 to 4 days in the fridge.

How to Freeze and Reheat Leftovers:

If you prefer, you can freeze your leftover black eyed peas. Place in a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.
