California fire map shows 36,145 acres burned as wildfires spread (2024)

A California fire map shows that 36,145 acres of land have been burned by ongoing wildfires as dry weather and hot temperatures spur flames statewide.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there were at least 14 wildfires burning across California. Many of them were battled by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), the state agency responsible for fighting and preventing wildfires. Fires ranged from 15 acres in size to 15,611 acres, with evacuations ordered for susceptible areas.

Below is a list of the fires currently burning in California, according to CAL FIRE's website.

Post Fire:

The largest wildfire currently burning in California is the Post Fire, which started on Saturday, according to CAL Fire. The flames encompass LA and Ventura counties and have prompted 1,200 people to evacuate.

"Evacuation orders will continue in the Hungry Valley OHV area," CAL FIRE said.

The flames have consumed 15,611 acres and are only 24 percent contained. Newsweek reached out to CAL FIRE by email for comment.

Sites Fire:

The Sites Fire is the second largest wildfire currently burning at 10,000 acres. Flames were first documented on Monday in Colusa County, and as of Tuesday afternoon, it was 0 percent contained. Evacuation orders have been issued for Leesville Lodoga Road South to Leesville Road, Leesville to Huffmaster Road, Huffmaster Road to Maxwell Sites Road, Leesville Road to Antelope Valley Ranch and North from Antelope Valley Ranch and Sites Lodoga Road.

Aero Fire:

The Aero Fire in Calaveras County also started on Monday and has since spread to 5,425 acres and is 20 percent contained. Evacuation orders are in place for several zones, according to CAL Fire.

"The Aero Fire is burning in an area that has not experienced a large fire since 2003 and is burning in grass and oak woodlands," CAL FIRE said.

Point Fire:

Flames from the Point Fire in Sonoma County are 40 percent contained after igniting on Sunday. The wildfire has burned 1,207 acres. An evacuation order is in place for one zone in the county as crews continue fighting the blaze.

Hesperia Fire:

The Hesperia Fire has burned 1,078 in San Bernardino County after igniting on Saturday. Crews have since contained 86 percent of the fire. There are no evacuation orders, although an evacuation warning is in place for Arrowhead Equestrian Estates.

Junes Fire:

The Junes Fire in Butte County is almost completely contained at 98 percent. Flames ignited on Saturday and have spread to 1,056 acres. CAL FIRE expects the fire to be completely contained by the end of the day, and there are no evacuation orders in place.

Hernandez Fire:

Flames from the Hernandez Fire in San Benito County have burned 642 acres after igniting on Saturday. Crews have controlled much of the fire, with 65 percent of it contained. According to CAL FIRE, the flames are burning in a remote part of the county and no evacuation orders are in place.

Tuscany Fire:

The Tuscany Fire in Riverside County is at least 50 percent contained since it started on Monday, but CAL FIRE noted it was not a CAL FIRE incident. As of the Monday evening update, the fire had spread to 350 acres.

Max Fire:

The Max Fire in Los Angeles County has consumed at least 338 acres since it ignited on Sunday. The most recent CAL FIRE update noted that the wildfire was not a CAL FIRE incident and therefore updates would be shared when available. The last update available was on Sunday.

Douglas Fire:

The Douglas Fire in Sacramento County has burned 327 acres since it started on Monday. It is 0 percent contained.

Hidden Fire:

The Hidden Fire in Shasta County has been 60 percent contained since it started on Sunday. The flames burned 45 acres, but CAL FIRE said that crews had stopped the fire's forward progress. There are no evacuation orders in place.

Slough Fire:

The Slough Fire in Riverside County has burned 33 acres since it started on Monday. So far it is 0 percent contained, and CAL FIRE said a crew has not been assigned to the incident.

Rocky Fire:

The Rocky Fire in Butte County is nearly completely contained at 98 percent after burning 18 acres since it started on Saturday. There are no evacuation orders in place, and CAL FIRE said it expects to have the fire completely contained by the end of the fay.

Railroad Fire:

The Railroad Fire in Madera County is the smallest wildfire burning in California right now at 15 acres, according to CAL FIRE. It started on Monday and is 0 percent contained. There was no evacuation information available.
