Do you enjoy decorating for Valentine's day? My mom always did a few small things for us kids, and I've carried on that tradition.
When my kids were younger, they enjoyed baking and decorating these soft sugar cookies. Now that they're older, I decorate more for me 😍
I'm excited to show you this super cute wreath, made with reproduction vintage Valentines. If you're a little older, you may remember exchanging Valentines, that looked similar, with your school friends.
Everything retro and vintage is in style again, and I couldn't wait to make this simple wreath after seeing an inspiration photo on Instagram. You can see the wreath that inspired me at @lecultivateur. Emily's wreath is so adorable, and I couldn't wait to make my own version. I love sharing the step by step tutorial to easy home decor pieces like this with you.
Here are a few other DIY Valentine's day wreath ideas:

How to make a vintage Valentine's Day wreath
You need just a couple of supplies to make this wreath.
Supplies
- vintage Valentines*
- wire wreath form (try a heart shape or a simple circle like I used)**
- strips of canvas drop cloth***
- hot glue
*you may already have vintage/retro Valentines, or you can find them on The Graphics Fairy or purchase digital files like I did here and here
** you could also use a flat wood wreath base (floral craft ring) and then you can skip the drop cloth/ribbon step
*** you could also use any wide ribbon
Step One
Print and cut out Valentines. I had to get prints made at Office Depot because our color printer is jammed, but it's very reasonable to have prints made. It took longer to cut out the cards than to assemble the wreath!
I do have a couple kits available that include enough pre-cut vintage Valentines for you to make your own wreath. You can find them on Mercarihere and here.
Step Two
Rip drop cloth into 2" strips. You do want to make sure you've washed and dried the drop cloth first.
Why do I rip drop cloth?
I actually rip most of the fabric that I craft with because it gives you a perfectly straight line, and frayed edges for very little effort!
Why drop cloth?
I love using drop cloth for crafts and home decor. Most recently I made these drop cloth Christmas napkins, this faux grainsack bolster pillow cover, and this fall DIY sign. One drop cloth is inexpensive and can be used for so many projects around the home. It has a wonderful natural color, and nubby texture that is perfect if you are a neutral lover or decorate with farmhouse style!
Step Three
Tightly wrap the strips of drop cloth around the wire wreath form, overlapping each row slightly so the form is completely covered. Use a little hot glue to secure ends. What this does is give more of a solid surface to glue the Valentines to. I used this same technique when I made my farmhouse ticking stripe Christmas wreath and it has held up beautifully!
Step Four
Tie ribbon or jute cording for a hanger. It's best to do this before attaching the Valentines! I used some leftover white ribbon I had.
Step Five
Finally, use a little hot glue to attach the Valentines in a pleasing pattern around the wreath form. It looks best if they slightly overlap.
I also added a few of the tiny clay hearts that I crafted last year for a garland. I snipped them off the cotton cording and tied narrow pink ribbon through the holes. Any vintage ephemera (like the tickets) is perfect on a retro wreath like this!
Isn't this a fun take on a Valentine's day wreath? Super simple to do but so charming! I hung the wreath on my chippy white door in my living room and love the pop of color it adds.
I'd love to know if you're inspired to make a vintage Valentines wreath. Oh and be watching for the tutorial for the heart garland in a few days! 💗💗💗
